SHEL SILVERSTEIN DIED May 10, 1999 – American writer, poet, cartoonist, songwriter, playwright and children’s author Shel Allan Silverstein died at age 68 in Key West, Florida, United States. He was born on September 25, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Silverstein briefly attended university before being drafted into the United States Army, he was best known for his light verse and quirky cartoons, children’s books. He did not limit his audience to children. During his rise to prominence in the 1950s, his illustrations were published in various newspapers and magazines, notably the adult-oriented Playboy. He also wrote a satirical, adult-oriented alphabet book, under the stylized name “Uncle Shelby”, which he used as an occasional pen name.
