July 6, 1957 – American tennis player Althea Neale Gibson (1927-2003) claims the women’s singles tennis title at Wimbledon and becomes the first African-American to win a championship at London’s All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Althea dominated women’s competition in the late 1950s. She was the first Black player to win the French (1956), Wimbledon (1957–58), and U.S. Open (1957–58) singles championships.
